Sabine’s Bio
Sabine Pothier, who likes to go by just “Sabine”, is an award-winning Russian-American pianist and composer. She received extensive training as a classical concert pianist in Russia at the Gnesnin School in Moscow and the United States at the Boston Conservatory and USC Thornton School of Music, winning the Liszt Los Angeles International Competition, the IBLA Grand Prize in Italy and the Concerto Competition at the Boston Conservatory. Sabine’s musical career path however was about to radically shift. After inheriting a jazz record collection, a Louie Armstrong and Ella Fitzgerald album captured her imagination. Sabine said, after she discovered the world of jazz music, she has never looked back! She is famous for playing by ear, using her stellar memorization skills to master numerous jazz standards. Sabine has played in jazz venues and festival including the LACMA Jazz series, San Jose Jazz Festival, The Lighthouse, Baked Potato, Barbara Morrison Performing Arts Center and more. While in the midwest and Washington, D.C., she played with notable jazz artists including Blue Note bassist Butch Warren of Herbie Hancock, Wayne Shorter and Thelonious Monk fame, trumpeter Scotty Barnhart, director of the Count Basie Orchestra and divas including Michelle Coltrane, daughter of saxophonist John Coltrane. Sabine has recorded jazz albums with her trio, Tony Dumas on bass and Jon Stuart on drums. Her trio might be performing in our concert series in the near future. For now we’ll enjoy Sabine’s remarkable jazz piano solos.
